Let’s Talk About It…

As the sequel to A Fire in the Sky, this book opens a year after the events at the ending of book one and a lot has changed. The differences between the first book and this one made it difficult to connect them as a single story. While we do have some of the same characters involved in the storyline, the events that transpired between the books have completely altered their personality making them seem like entirely new characters.

I found the prose to be stronger in this book. This may be because, unlike book one, A Scar in the Bone is mostly told from a single character’s point of view. However, the pacing was a bit off for me. I felt like the first 2/3 of this book were relatively slow and then the pace picked up significantly in the last 100 pages. I found the ending satisfying, but would have enjoyed more time for development of that part of the story.

There were some things I did really enjoy about this book. First, is the positive relationship Tamsyn has with her partner. The understanding between them is very refreshing. Speaking of positive relationships, I appreciated that Tamsyn got a strong female friendship in this book. It added a nice additional layer to the story that wasn’t seen in the first book. I also liked that this book spent more time on the dragon backstory and lore than we saw in book one. The way the backstory was presented was engaging and woven into the rest of the story well.

Overall, I enjoyed this book. The ending was interesting and has left me intrigued to see what the author, Sophie Jordan, has in store for us in the next book in the series, Spellcast (anticipated release July 28, 2026).
